Tram en Thai @ Maastricht | Juli Corona week 19
Vlak voor de boekhandel zie ik twee prachtige mensen een beetje aan de kant staan wachten. Het zijn Tram en Thai en ze hebben elkaar in Vietnam leren kennen. Thai werkt in Groningen en Tram studeert aan de UM art and culture, maar nu hebben ze vakantie.
Ik ben benieuwd naar wat voor hun essentieel veranderd is in Coronatijd en dat is nogal wat.
Thai werd zich bijvoorbeeld meer bewust van hoe witte mensen naar hem kijken als hij de straat op gaat en verbaast zich erover dat een groot deel van de Nederlanders het verschil niet ziet tussen Vietnamezen en Chinezen.
Ja, zegt Tram, ik werd een paar keer zomaar van de straat geduwd.
Waarom dat dan? vraag ik, hoewel ik wel een vermoeden heb.
I don’t know, it was at the beginning of the lockdown, zegt ze schouderophalend.
Hmmm… do you think it is because people thought you where from Wuhan? vraag ik.
I don’t want to make the connection, zegt ze, maar misschien, zegt ze. Haar blik is veelzeggend.
I missed going out being not so self conscious, zegt Thai.
How do you mean? vraag ik.
How we look, zegt Tram vriendelijk. Yeah, being an Asian in a country that clearly has some attitude issues with Asian looking people ever since this whole thing started, zegt Thai geëmotioneerd.
Oei, daar schrik ik van.
Before that I was fine. It was already there of course zegt hij, it is just more intens.
I live in Nazareth, legt Tram verder uit. It is in the outskirt of the city, and you don’t see a lot of Asian looking people. Normally I feel ok going out and people looking at me, but during Covid it gets more and more evident.
Maar verder is er niet veel voor Thai veranderd, zegt hij. Hij werkt aan zijn PHD in Groningen en dan werk je sowieso al veel thuis. I missed interacting with some colleagues. Maar over het algemeen gaat het goed.
Voor Tram heeft deze tijd toch iets meer uitdagingen. Ze woont met nog drie anderen in een klein huis en als je daar een tijdje opgesloten zit komen de muren wel op je af, zegt ze en dat is niet goed voor je mentale gezondheid.
Maar we moeten er allemaal mee dealen in deze tijd, dus het is oké, zegt ze.
Ik mis het om naar school te gaan en ik mis het contact met mijn supervisor, want net dát helpt mij om de discipline op te brengen om te studeren. And I missed my friends.
Is there something that gave you hope during the lockdown?
I never lost my hope, zegt Thai. I don’t really needed it. I’m pretty resilient in living with ups and downs, being not white and living in The Netherlands.
And I have a lot of international colleagues on the internet that I can talk to who have the same issue, so yeah.
And how is that for you Tram?
Because of the quarantine I had to deal with myself a lot. One good effect of it was that I connected more with my roommates. We talked more and had more activities. We sang and danced and that was very much fun. I don’t think it would have been the same without Covid. It sounds very bad but… ze lacht.
But at the same time I heard a lot of stories from my friends who weren’t be able to get tested because the testing centre for whole Limburg is 20 Km from Maastricht. And when you are a student and you don’t have a car you have a problem. You cannot rent a taxi and risk others getting Covid. She wanted to go to the GP for something, but he wanted her to test for Covid first which was a problem.
Yes, and people don’t take a stranger in their car that might be ill of course, zeg ik.
In Groningen you can get tested right in the city, zegt ze. That is important.
You are wearing a mask, why did you choose to wear one? wil ik nog weten.
My family is not here, zegt Tram aan haar masker frummelend. So I’m doing this for the sake of the people around me.
Wearing a mask is to protect others, zegt Thai, not for yourself. In Aken you have to wear a mask, I don’t know what is so different about The Netherlands, but.. en dan is Thai stil.
They say it is not proven it works, leg ik uit en iedereen gebruikt het ding, zit er met zijn handen aan en bewaart het in zijn broekzak, dus het kan meer besmettingen veroorzaken dan dat het die voorkomt, zeg ik.
Yeah, true, zegt Thai. But you can look at all the counties in the world that have it under control and see what they are doing. And Germany is doing it, so do it! Zegt hij er niks van begrijpende.
And also in close proximity like in these streets, I think wearing a mask would be good, zegt Tram. Also it would work better if everybody is wearing it instead of just me, because I’m just protecting my spit from getting on to other people. And I risk getting split on me, zegt ze.
I’m not at risk at all, I don’t have any health problems, but I do it for other people.
I also have a friend that works in a hospital and he is doing data analysis and he is really concerned with the number, it is two fold now and a lot of people are not getting tested because they are not able to reach the centre, zegt ze tot slot.
En dat is inderdaad iets om bij stil te staan denk ik.

CORONAPROJECT over HOOP en zo🍀
Zoveel mensen, zoveel manier om met deze corona-crisis om te gaan. In dit project neem ik tijdens het halen van mijn dagelijks frisse neus slechts mijn telefoon mee op pad en verzamel verhalen over hoop, betekenis, contact maken en plezier hebben in deze tijd. En vanaf juni ben ik ook benieuwd hoe je denkt over alle maatregelen en of je het nog allemaal een beetje volhoudt.
Wat heb je over jezelf ontdekt, zijn er dingen die je meer bent gaan waarderen en wat is er veranderd dat je best graag zou willen meenemen als dit allemaal voorbij is? Neem hier een kijkje, er komen regelmatig verhalen bij.
